Miles was born in Westminster, Massachusetts, on his family's farm. He worked in Boston, read military history, and mastered military principles and techniques, including battle drills. Miles was working as a crockery store clerk in Boston when the American Civil War began. He entered the Union Army as a volunteer on September 9, 1861, and fought in many crucial battles. Virginia Weisel Johnson was born in Missoula, Mont., in 1910. Her family was among the first in the Missoula Valley. Johnson graduated from high school in Missoula and finishing schools in Washington, D.C. Johnson married Brig. Gen. William M. Johnson in 1933. They lived in England, Germany, and Okinawa, and returned to Missoula in 1957. Upon their return to Missoula, Virginia and her husband managed the Double Arrow Ranch near Missoula.
