Miles was born in Westminster, Massachusetts, on his family's farm. He worked in Boston, read military history, and mastered military principles and techniques, including battle drills. Virginia Weisel Johnson was born in Missoula, Mont., in 1910. Her family was among the first in the Missoula Valley. Johnson graduated from high school in Missoula and finishing schools in Washington, D.C. Johnson married Brig. Gen. William M. Johnson in 1933.
